High fashion, high speed and high culture: May essentials for the elite
May is a month full of interesting events for the elite. The weather starts to get milder (in the northern hemisphere, at least), and the high season begins for major international events that bring together the world’s most influential figures from all walks of life: art, economics, and society. From the media spectacle of the Met Gala to the cinematic elegance of the Cannes Film Festival, we are in for a busy month. Let’s review our selection of some of these events!
(Below, in Spanish)
Memphis International Auto Show (2-4 May)
This show in the United States showcases luxury vehicles and the latest innovations in the automotive industry. A grand display of exotic and exclusive cars.
Met Gala (in New York, 5 May)
This is a charity event that marks the start of the annual fashion exhibition at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This year’s theme is ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, focusing on the influence of Black fashion on haute couture. The ‘tailored for you’ dress code invites guests to interpret tailoring in their own personal way. The event will be co-hosted by such important personalities and celebrities as Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, Anna Wintour, and Colman Domingo, with LeBron James as honorary president.
Feria de Abril (Seville, 6–11 May)
As the ultimate expression of the vibrant identity of Andalusia and Spain, the Seville April Fair (this year in May) is synonymous with flamenco, horses, traditional costumes, gastronomy, and a festive atmosphere. Over time, it has gained international prominence among elites and international figures seeking exclusive, elegant, and sophisticated experiences. Add to this the media coverage and visibility – where the most prestigious marquees belong to influential families and institutions – and the Fair becomes an informal space in which to establish high-level contacts and, of course, have fun.
Basel Fair – BASELWORLD (in Basel, Switzerland, from 8 to 15 May)
One of the world’s most important luxury jewellery and watch fairs. The latest innovations from the most exclusive brands are on display.
Venice Biennale (10 May to 23 November)
No introduction needed… This is the international contemporary art exhibition and the meeting point par excellence for world-renowned artists and collectors. There are two main components to the festival, known as the Art Biennale and the Architecture Biennale, which take place in alternate years. This year’s theme is: ‘Intelligence: natural, artificial and collective’.
People in Red Charity Gala (Barcelona, 12 May)
This is one of Spain’s most prominent charity events – and, of course, a key meeting point for the international elite. Its 15th edition will be held at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC). Apart from its commitment to scientific research into infectious diseases, it is important for bringing together, on the same stage, leaders and prominent figures in support of a common cause. As a result, it has established itself as an unmissable event on the calendar of high-level international events.
Cannes Film Festival 2025 (13 to 24 May)
The prestigious film festival held in the French city of Cannes brings together the elite of the world of cinema, including exclusive screenings and events. This year, Juliette Binoche will be the president of the jury, and Robert De Niro will receive the honorary Palme d’Or. It is a stage with great international visibility, where, apart from personalities from the world of cinema, we see designers, fashion houses, jewellers, and luxury brands that use this festival as a platform to showcase their influence. It is also a key market for luxury, where yachts in the harbour and private parties are part of the spectacle.
amfAR Gala (Cannes, 22 May)
The amfAR Galas are charity events organised by The Foundation for AIDS Research, one of the leading non-profit organisations dedicated to HIV research. Their aim is to raise funds to finance research, treatment, and awareness of AIDS. The next event will be held at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, located in Cap d’Antibes, France, coinciding with the Cannes Film Festival. Celebrities, film stars, fashion designers, and philanthropists will gather there.
Monaco Grand Prix (25 May)
This major sporting event stands out for its distinction and luxury, bringing together celebrities and influential figures from around the world. It is safe to say that no other sporting event combines speed and motorsport so closely with the social scene, as it is attended by members of royal families, Hollywood stars, magnates, etc. In addition, we can add history and prestige, as it has been held since 1929 and has always been a fuse of sport, fashion, and business.
Roland Garros (in Paris, from 25 May to 8 June)
Another sporting event that is also among the most prestigious in the world is Roland Garros. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, attracting the elite of the sport, bringing together the best international tennis players and being a symbol of sporting excellence and glamour.
That’s May: a month where major international events reveal how art, fashion, and entertainment are not just entertainment, but a showcase for the place certain events occupy in the universe of global power and influence.
‘May is the fairest month in the year, when life and nature celebrate their rebirth’
(William Shakespeare)
