Let’s continue to open the doors to some of the most coveted clubs to discover what goes on inside. Today we’ll talk about the Bohemian Club (San Francisco), a private club exclusively for gentlemen…

The Bohemian Club was founded in 1872 in San Francisco, California. Its founders were a group of journalists, artists, musicians and writers who wanted to create a space for camaraderie and creative and bohemian collaboration. Little by little, it became an elite club, joined by highly influential figures from the business, academic and even political worlds.

Today, the club has approximately 2,500 members, although the exact number is not public, nor are the entrance fees, which are not officially disclosed but are estimated to be between $25,000 and $30,000 USD. The annual fee, also approximate, is around $10,000 USD. We must emphasise that all this information is estimated, as the club does not publish its fees

. Originally, its members were artists and journalists, as mentioned above, but today it includes influential men from various sectors: senior executives of large companies (especially Fortune 500); politicians (senators, former presidents, advisers); renowned academics and scientists; personalities from the cultural and musical world (to a lesser extent than in its early days). The club does not admit women as members, a policy that has been widely criticised.

As for the advantages of belonging to this select club, which we could summarise as social and strategic benefits rather than purely material ones, we can mention: access to a powerful network of contacts in an informal and exclusive environment and, of course, participation in the well-known annual retreat at Bohemian Grove. This is a two-week camp in an 11 km² private redwood forest in Monte Rio, California, where private talks (‘Lakeside Talks’), concerts and important meetings between world leaders are held. It is a space protected from the media and public scrutiny, making it an ideal environment for discussing ideas without external pressure.

 

 

Another fundamental benefit of belonging to this club is undoubtedly the membership in a historical tradition of cultural, social, and political influence.

One of its best-known events is the opening ritual, known as the ‘cremation of care’, which involves the symbolic burning of a figure called ‘care’. This is done in front of a 12-metre-high statue of an owl, which represents the goddess of wisdom, Minerva, the club’s emblem. Although security is very tight, in 2000 a journalist, Alex Jones, managed to sneak in and film part of the ceremony.

On the other hand, although membership of the club is confidential, some famous members are known, such as Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger and Colin Powell, among others.

As a curious fact, the club has a motto, which is: ‘weaving spiders come not here’ (business cobwebs are not allowed). However, in practice, it seems that this is quite different, as it is believed that important decisions have been made in this environment. In fact, there are conspiracy theories that suggest that the global agenda is decided there behind the scenes…

La exclusividad en su máxima expresión… Así definimos lo que se vive dentro de los clubes privados más prestigiosos. Desde la alta sociedad hasta los líderes empresariales e incluso celebridades, se trata de sedes que ejercen como refugio para quienes buscan privacidad, lujo y vínculos selectos. Vamos a continuar entreabriendo la puerta de algunos de los clubes más codiciados para descubrir lo que acontece en su interior. Hoy hablaremos de Bohemian Club (San Francisco), un club privado exclusivamente para caballeros…

 

Bohemian Club nació en el año 1872 en San Francisco, California. Y sus fundadores fueron un grupo de periodistas, artistas, músicos y escritores que buscaban abrir un espacio de camaradería y conjunción creativa y bohemia. Poco a poco, fue convirtiéndose en un club de élite, al que se unieron personalidades muy influyentes en el mundo empresarial, académico e incluso político.

Hoy el club tiene 2.500 miembros aproximadamente, aunque la cifra exacta no es pública, al igual que las cuotas de entrada, que no son oficialmente divulgadas, pero estarían entre $25,000 y $30,000 USD. Y la cuota anual -también aproximada- vendría a estar sobre $10,000 USD. Insistimos en que hay que tener en cuenta que toda esta información es estimada pues el club no publica sus tarifas

Originalmente sus miembros fueron artistas y periodistas, como hemos mencionado anteriormente, pero hoy incluye a hombres influyentes de diversos sectores: altos ejecutivos de grandes empresas (especialmente Fortune 500); políticos (senadores, expresidentes, asesores); académicos y científicos reconocidos; personalidades del ámbito cultural y musical (en menor medida que en sus inicios. El club no admite mujeres como miembros, política que ha sido bastante criticada.

En cuanto a las ventajas de pertenecer a este selecto club, que podríamos resumir en beneficios sociales y estratégicos, más que puramente materiales, podemos citar: el acceso a una red poderosa de contactos en un entorno informal y exclusivo y, por supuesto, la participación en el conocido retiro anual en Bohemian Grove. Es un campamento de dos semanas en un bosque privado de secuoyas de 11 km² en Monte Rio, California, donde se celebran charlas privadas (“Lakeside Talks”), conciertos, y encuentros importantes entre líderes mundiales. Se trata de un espacio protegido de los medios de comunicación y del escrutinio público, con lo cual, supone un entorno idóneo para debatir ideas sin presión externa.

Otra de las aportaciones fundamentales de pertenecer a este club es, sin duda, la pertenencia a una tradición histórica de influencia tanto cultural como social y  política.

Como dato curioso, el club tiene un lema, y es: “weaving spiders come not here” (las telarañas de los negocios quedan fuera). No obstante, en la práctica – al parecer- es bien distinto, pues que se cree que en este entorno se han gestado importantes decisiones. De hecho, hay teorías conspiratorias que señalan que allí se decide la agenda global en la sombra…
